The Attackers: Mexican Army Facts

By TheAlamoFilm.com

Mexican Army

It has been said that the Mexican Army was made up mostly of conscripts (natives of Mexico forced to fight). However, most of them were long-service professionals who had served for 8-10 years in many battles within Mexico.

• Available Force: About 2500 troops, not counting artillery, headquarters, camp followers, and other service personnel.

• Assault Force: Possibly 1507 men, but other Mexican sources claim 1400.

• Casualties: 70, 200, 400, 600? Mexican reports were unreliable and we can guess that Santa Anna lied about certain numbers. As stated above, the attacking force probably did not exceed 1400 and most sources claim that the Army lost 200 dead with 400 wounded. Keep in mind that military medicine at the time was nil...and we can bet that most of the wounded later died of their wounds. So, it's hard to say what the final losses were. Some documents claim Santa Anna lost 43% of his 1400 attacking force.
