When visiting San Antonio, many vacationers feel that staying in a standard or “chain” hotel is the best way to go. However, I’m sure that if they knew about some of the amazing historic hotels located minutes from top attractions, they would quickly change their minds. Here is a list of a few of the greatest historical hotels in San Antonio, all of which are very near the Alamo.
The Fairmount Hotel is a luxurious throwback to the Roaring Twenties. Built in 1906, this hotel enjoyed great popularity during the Gilded Age of America. The architecture is classically Victorian, but on the inside, it is luxury all the way! The 37 rooms and suites inside the hotel are individually decorated, giving you a new experience each time you stay. Modern amenities like the Sage Restaurant and Bar delight everyone with their smooth Italian cuisine, while a fully equipped fitness center provides a place to work off that pasta and tiramisu. For those traveling for business reasons, a full business center is always open. Want to know an interesting fact about the Fairmount? In 1984 many voted to demolish the structure, but city leaders ultimately decided to completely move the Fairmount by placing it on rollers. This led to a mention in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the largest structure ever moved on wheels. Rooms feature European bedding, antiques, and a series of other amenities that add a certain finished touch to the accommodations.
The Clarion O’Brien Historic Hotel, with 39 beautifully decorated rooms and a location that can’t be beat, is without a doubt a fabulous place to stay while in San Antonio. The hotel was recently reopened under the Clarion family in 2003 and now boasts all of the modern amenities that you could want. Plush robes and whirlpool bathtubs give each room a luxurious touch that historic hotels were famous for. A continental breakfast, high speed internet, and cable TV provide entertainment when you aren’t out seeing all that San Antonio has to offer!
St. Anthony, a Wyndham Historic Hotel, is a wonderful place for both romantic couples and rowdy families to stay. Built in 1909 this hotel combines both classical and modern elements in a way that is breathtaking. From the opulent front lobby to the extremely comfortable guest rooms, this hotel gets it right! With an outdoor swimming pool, fitness center, and location adjacent to Travis Park, there is plenty to keep you occupied when staying at this hotel. Retreat to your room after a day of sightseeing or exercise and you’ll be completely relaxed and comfortable. Heavenly bedding and antique furniture give the rooms a quintessential feeling of the past meeting the present.
The Crockett Hotel was originally established in 1909 and rests on grounds that were used during the Battle for the Alamo. Two major renovations, one in the 1980’s and one in 2007, have given the hotel a thoroughly modern touch, although it does retain some of its more historic aspects. An outdoor swimming pool and continental breakfast are just a few of the amenities offered at this hotel. One of the most popular reasons that people choose the Crockett, of course, is the amazing location just steps from the Alamo.
The Menger Hotel is another historic hotel in the San Antonio downtown area. Amazingly built in 1859, this hotel stands as it did in the 19th century but has some favorable modern touches. An outdoor swimming pool and fitness center are just two of these touches. Inside the Menger there are three different places to dine or drink, adding convenience to the comfort that they hotel undeniably provides. Rooms are decorated in different styles, but each one is outfitted in the most luxurious bedding and amenities out there. If you want to experience a hauntingly (the Menger is believed to be haunted by several spirits) good vacation, then you must choose the Menger.
These are just a few of the amazing historic hotels in and around San Antonio. But keep in mind, these hotels are near the Alamo, boast unique features, and promise a ghostly good time!
